Communication is a pivotal skill, stretching into every aspect of our lives. With it, we more easily discover opportunities, express compliments and praise, speak out against injustice, resolve conflicts, solve problems, share what we know, make our lives more comfortable, and engage with the world. Our children learn language early, both verbal and non-verbal, and begin to communicate their own intentions and feelings about their world. Good communicators, there can be little doubt, have better outcomes in life.
The most crucial skill in communication however, the talent that can make you successful with your partner, well-liked in your profession, your friend group and your family, is listening. When you truly make space to listen, people often feel profound gratitude. Instead of pushing against resistance to be heard, as they so often have to do, they sense that there is room for them, their feelings, their point of view, and they will reward you for feeling heard.
This skill, that of listening openly and with real compassion, is a helpful one to find in a skilled massage therapist. Your therapist will listen to any new complaints, body aches or dysfunction, and help direct you to appropriate treatment. Your massage therapist can also help discover any problem areas. We sometimes miss aches and pains, or avoid them to push on with our day, get our families fed, get to work and get home. But the body communicates, and it does so perfectly. Although we may develop any number of practices to detune from it, the body is always sending messages, and attempting to bring itself into balance. With the calm, focused environment of a therapeutic massage session, your therapist can help you discover areas that need further attention. He or she can then often help to resolve issues like muscle knots, poor circulation or lymphatic drainage, and muscle tension.
